Lake Ronkonkoma Beach Closing For Swimmers

Water quality unacceptable, says Suffolk County Department of Health Services.

Lake Ronkonkoma Beach is closed to bathing due to excessive levels of a blue-green algae also known as Cyanobacteria, announced commissioner of health services Dr. James Tomarken Wednesday.

A release from the Suffolk County Department of Health Services says that the beach is closed until health officials can determine that the water quality level is acceptable. The department says that beaches closed in this situation are typically sampled daily in order to reopen them as soon as possible.

To check in on the status of the beach, residents can call the Bathing Beach hotline at 631-852-5822, the department's office of ecology at 631-852-5760 or visit www.suffolkcountyny.gov/health checking under the "Our Environment" section and clicking "Beaches."
