A opossum was shot in the face with a pellet gun and then dumped in a garbage pail in front of a Holtsville home last week.
The opossum was found alive and is expected to survive, but the Suffolk County Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is asking for the public's help to track down who shot the animal.
The opossum was found in a garbage pail by a resident on Blossom Avenue on April 24, according to Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross. The resident took the opossum to a local veterinarian.
"This is a blatant act of animal cruelty and we will do everything we can to see that those responsible are apprehended," Gross said.
Anyone with information can contact the Suffolk County SPCA confidentially at 631-382-7722.
