Sachem BOE Hears Pitches For Redistricting Work

The Sachem Board of Education opened it August 7 work session by hearing bid proposals from two entities vying for the task of evaluating Sachem's enrollment projections and redistricting scenarios.

The work could be used to inform future decisions from the board on how to reduce budgetary expenses, up to and including school closures.

The board heard proposals from Wayne Verderber, principal of Applied Data Services in New Jersey and Joan Townley, school planning coordinator for Western Suffolk BOCES.

The board also discussed the apparent elimination of the 4:45 p.m. middle school bus service, which President Robert Scavo said was cut erroneously from the transportation budget during the budget process last spring.

Future agenda items for the board's next meeting will include discussions on an advisory committee which will be needed during the demographic/redistricting study. Also pegged for the next meeting is a session on how to restore the middle school late buses.

Patch will have more on these and other items discussed at Wednesday's board meeting to come.
