As a recent graduate of St. Joseph’s College with a B.A. in Mathematics and Adolescent Education, Doug Smith has a passion for discovery and dedication to public service. Since 2008 he has been teaching math and computer classes through Sachem’s Community Education Program and weekend courses for elementary students at Seneca Middle School. In 2011, he started the Long Island T.E.A.M. Initiative as a mentoring program, pairing local college students with students from high risk schools across Suffolk County. Smith has a NYS Teacher Certification for grades 7 through 12 and is a member of the Kappa Mu Epsilon National Mathematics Honor Society.

Over the last few years, Smith has had the opportunity to view a side of the community and government that few see; interning in the Islip Town Supervisor’s Office; working at the Patchogue District Office of the Social Security Administration; campaigning across New York’s First Congressional District with George Demos; acting as a U.S. Department of Energy student researcher at Brookhaven National Laboratory; and currently serving the 5th Assembly District as Constituent Services Director to New York State Assemblyman Al Graf.

These experiences have allowed Smith to work alongside some of Long Island’s top problem solvers. A strong believer that “all politics is local,” he describes himself as a Conservative Republican who places “principles over party,” and, “people over politics.”

Doug Smith graduated Sachem North Class of 2008. His contributions will be focused primarily on community solutions, education, government, politics, and the development of Long Island for the next generation.
