Suffolk Lacrosse Playoffs Begin This Week

West Islip is the top seed for boys; Ward Melville is No. 1 girls team.

Lacrosse is a Long Island state of mind, and nothing showcased that more than the state playoffs a year ago. Three Long Island boys squads played in state title games, which ended with Farmingdale hoisting its first Class A plaque.  It could have easily been West Islip instead. The teams played a thrilling Long Island championship game decided in overtime. West Islip, after all, has worn four of the last six state crowns.  Perennial girls lacrosse power Northport finally broke through and won its first state Class A championship. In fact, Long Island girls teams have won nine of 10 possible state class titles (A, B, C) since 2009. But the first step is winning Suffolk, which begins with boys and girls lacrosse playoff games this week. The …

Michels Breaks 100-Meter Dash Record

North girls track takes part in Loucks Games.

North sophomore Melissa Michels broke the 1000-meter dash record she tied earlier this week in the preliminary round of the 100-meter dash at the 45th annual Loucks Games held at White Plains High School last Friday.  Melissa earned a spot in finals with her 7.40 time. Melissa’s work out of the starting blocks over the past several weeks has resulted in a more explosive start, a key element to fast times and competitive races against strong Suffolk County competition. Melissa approached her 90 minute old record time in finals with a 7.46 time and sixth place finish.  A restart and a false start gave the finals extra drama. After seven of the remaining eight (following the false start) sprinters settled into their blocks, the starter’s …

League Champions: Sachem East Girls Track and Field

Win over Ward Melville Tuesday caps undefeated season.

The Sachem East girls track and field team wrapped up an undefeated season, taking home the League II crown with a 100-50 win over Ward Melville on Tuesday. With the meet at home, and the senior day celebration awaiting the outcome, the oportunity for this storied group of seniors to showcase their talents was laid out like the red carpet at the Academy Awards. Fitingly, they put on quite a show. Rachel Paul was the only two event winner, taking the 1500 and 800, but three other seniors also won their events. Kelly Maranchuck won the 1500 racewalk, Danielle Vasquez the 3000, and Sam Maurice took the high jump. Sam Eng ran a lifetime best to place 2nd in the 55 hurdles, Pam Emengo placed 2nd in the discus, and Alysssa Furlani closed out a …

Seniors Lead North Girls Track to Win on Senior Day

Michels ties school record in 100m; cousins square off in relay.

Sachem closed out its dual meet season with a win over Lindenhurst by a score of 108-42 Tuesday. Twenty-nine North Arrows factored in team scoring as Sachem won 11 of 15 open events and swept the relays. Sachem seniors dominated relay squads as Alyssa Smith and Danielle White ran legs 3 and 4 of the 4x100, Aprilrose Marasco led off and Andrea Hegarty anchored the 4x400 and Kristi O’Hagan and Becca Duffy ran on the 4x800.   Kristi O’Hagan was surprised to see her name listed on the 4x800.  A sprinter and long jumper in all of her six winter and spring seasons on Sachem teams, Kristi asked Coach Young if the lineup was correct. Kristi quickly learned that she would be closing out the meet by running her first ever 800 meter distance. Kristi …

North Girls Track Has Season-Best Weekend at St. Anthony’s

Impressive performances all around for North Arrows as postseason nears.

The St. Anthony’s Invitational is always a special part of Sachem's spring schedule. Held on the first weekend in May, Sachem performances at St. Anthony’s are a harbinger of the fast-approaching post-season. If Sachem efforts are any sort of a bell-weather of things to come, the North Arrows are poised for a very exciting post-season. Sprinters and high jumpers starred on Day 1 of St. Anthony’s. Melissa Michels ran a career-best 25.98 in the unseeded 200 m. race (the #3 200 m. time of the meet) and led-off the 3rd place 4x100 m. relay. Melissa, Emily Rathmann, Carly Swinford and Sunja Joseph ran the third fastest 4x100 time of the season on a warm and perfect running day. Carly and Kristie Michta enjoyed the finest day by a pair of high …

Scarpelli, Relayers Shatter School Records for East

East boys track took part in the St. Anthony’s Invitational over the weekend.

This past weekend the Sachem East Boys track team participated in the St. Anthony’s Invitational in South Huntington. Coming off a Senior Night victory over Lindenhurst on Thursday night, the Arrows were determined to compete well in this important meet. And, compete well they did. Starting out on Friday night, two young intermediate hurdlers blazed through the barriers to post outstanding times. Utsav Desphande finished in a time of 61.00 and Trevor Guerrera was close on his heels at 61.19. This now moves Utsav into the number 1 ranking for freshmen 400 hurdlers in Suffolk County, while Trevor is now ranked number 3 among sophomore competitors. In the discus “Big” Patrick Bradley tossed his way to an 8th place finish. Not to be outdone …

North Girls Track Toughs Out Win Over Connetquot

Flaming Arrows claim a 87-63 win.

Sachem North Girls Track & Field team evened its League II record at 2-2 with a strong win over Connetquot last Thursday. The meet score of 87-63 belies how close the meet was as Sachem did not clinch victory until long jump was contested just before the relays.   Sachem scored its 74th team point (76 points wins a dual meet) when Marysa Mullen placed third in the 3000 meter run behind Connetquot’s Jess Smillie and Erin Melly (the duo also went 1-2 in the 1500 meter run).  Sunja Joseph and Melissa Michels went 1-2 in long jump and team victory was ensured as Sachem was up 82-53 going into the relays.  Sachem won the 4x100 meter relay to close out its scoring day. Connetquot held the lead nearing the halfway mark with wins in the 1500, 400…

North's Patrick Lavan Breaks Coach's Freshman Mile Record

Lavan's 4:46 mile Saturday breaks 39-year-old record that had been held by Sachem coach Rich O’Brien.

Sachem North track and field coach Rich O’Brien starred for Sachem cross country and track teams in the mid-70s.   Coach O’Brien presently coaches the Sachem North boys winter track and field and girls spring track and field teams. Coach O’Brien was at St. Anthony’s on Saturday as the North girls distance squad was enjoying it finest meet day of the spring season when freshman Patrick Lavan stepped to the starting line for the boys unseeded 1600 meter run. Patrick is one of the emerging stars of the boys track team and had learned a lot about mental toughness and running from O’B (as all boys and girls team members refer to Coach O’Brien) during his rookie indoor season. Patrick settled into mid-pack during the first half mile of a fast-…
