LRCO Takes Part in Great Brookhaven Plant In

Organization helps beautify Arrowhead Park.

Members of the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization gathered Saturday morning at Arrowhead Community Park for the Great Brookhaven Plant-In. Flats of various flowers and plants were provided by the Town for this event.  Trees in the park had previously been donated for planting.  The members who volunteered on this May morning focused on weeding and planting in the area near the flagpole at the center of the park.

George Schramm, President of the Lake Ronkonkoma Civic Organization, said that this was the third year the Organization hosted the event and that it was the second year they held it at Arrowhead Community Park.

Schramm the property where Arrowhead Park is situated was once an abused piece of land.

"There were cars that were for sale parked on the property, there was an issue with dumping," he recalled. "The property was really abused until it was purchased by the town. Last year the American Legion donated the flagpole to the park and this year the arrow shaped stone was donated.

"The Town put up the guardrail and the walkways and civic members cut the grass here on a volunteer basis."

He also said that they hope to put up a directory in the park that will explain to tourists the different things that can be seen around Lake Ronkonkoma, which is just up the road.  Schramm said he hopes this can be an Eagle Scout project.

It was also mentioned that a brick program is in place for creating a memorial plaza surrounding the flagpole. Schramm said that LRCO member Nick Crismali is overseeing the buy-a-brick program and that the bricks are able to have three lines of a personalized message written on them.  For those that want more information on this program Crismali can be reached at (631) 585-3647.
