Laughter Wounds All Heals

Comedians are observers of the world we live in. Using elements of surprise and recognition, we laugh at them, but really laugh at ourselves. The best comedians teach us something in the process. George Carlin was probably the best when it came to making us think. Everyone has heard the expression “timing is everything” when it comes to telling jokes. As a comedian, I can tell you, this is the honest truth. Every comedian tries to write the funniest joke ever written. It’s not going to happen. It’s not saying funny things, but saying things funny that makes it all work. Proof of this is when a non-comedian tries to repeat a joke and it falls flat. There is a definite art to joke telling.

Some comics see the value in shocking an audience. Such is the case when they joke about tragic events. These subjects are off-limits, at least for a while. Woody Allen said it best “The formula for comedy is tragedy plus time”. When Gilbert Gottfried joked about the Japanese Tsunami the day after the tragedy, he was fired from Aflac. Too soon. I imagine some newbie comedians out there are already cracking jokes about Boston. Too soon. Many would argue that jokes about Sandy Hook and even 9/11 are still too soon. Perhaps there will never be a good time to poke fun at those tragedies. I have never heard a Pearl Harbor joke. Most people find it disturbing to even approach the thought of joking about such events.

In this politically correct world, we have forgotten how to laugh at ourselves. I watch shows like “All In The Family” and “Sanford & Sons” and think, this could never air today. We have become more sensitive in a world that seems to be filled with insensitivity.

We need to learn how to laugh at ourselves again. Lord knows we need it now, more than ever.

I have no problem with politically incorrect humor, or poking fun at tragic events. The only thing it needs to be is funny. That’s the hard part. If you are going to step into that tender area, make sure it’s a guaranteed laugh.

Shows like South Park, The Daily Show, and the late night talk show comedians, have succeeded at making a living at finding the comedy in current events. It’s always going to be too soon for some people, but if we can find a way to laugh, we will heal.
