Hugh Daniel Murray IV - Humor through the pain

Comedians have a lot to say. Such is the case for Hugh Daniel Murray IV. Born and raised in Levittown, Hugh has been on the local scene for close to four years. In comedy years, practically an embryo. However, he has made great strides in a short time, opening for some big names such as Joey Kola, Joe Starr, Chris Monty, Richie Minervini and more. Hugh was also selected to audition for Montreal’s “Just For Laughs” festival.

When I asked Hugh how he would describe his comedy he said “It’s a defense mechanism. A masking device used to hide all the horrible things I've been through in my life.” Many comedians find humor in the pain. The ability to share them in a humorous, relatable way is an acquired skill.

Growing up two blocks from Governors Comedy Club, Hugh attended many shows and became a student of stand-up comedy. He finally made the leap, sought out the area’s open mics, hit the stage and never looked back. Understanding the value of writing, he started a blog, and works tirelessly to develop his craft. Hugh has been fortunate to meet and seek advice from A-listers in comedy like Louis CK, Jim Norton and Jim Jeffries. They all told him the same thing. “Nobody owes you anything. It takes time, hard work and perseverance to get to the top”.

Hugh has enjoyed every experience, other than bombing, which is an obvious downside of the comedian’s existence. He loves performing with friends like Mike Keegan, George Gallo, Terry McNeely and Anthony DiDomenico and hopes to make many more friends through constant networking.

Hugh’s advice to newcomers in comedy, aside from the obvious (writing and stage time), is, “don't do drugs or drink” and “don't sleep with comics or staff at venues”. I will leave it at that. The future is wide open for Hugh. “I'm starting to write more to broaden my horizons. I have plans to write a screenplay, a sitcom and to keep performing whenever and wherever I can. The goal is to become so good I can't be ignored”
