Yovino Finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year

Sachem and Hofstra alum still piling up the honors.

Sachem alum and Former Hofstra women's soccer midfielder Tiffany Yovino was selected as one of two Colonial Athletic Association nominees for the 2011 NCAA Woman Of The Year Award, according to Hofstra.

An NCAA committee will choose 10 semifinalists from among a list comprised of two nominees from each Division I conference (as well as 10 nominees from Division II and Division III) in August.

In September, the committee will then choose nine finalists from that group of 30, who will be invited to the annual ceremony in Indianapolis on Oct. 16, when the winner will be announced. Yovino and James Madison women's basketball player Dawn Evans will be the two nominees from the CAA.

Yovino ended her storied career this fall by leading Hofstra to a 19-3 record, setting school records for wins (19), consecutive wins (18) and conference wins (11) in a season. She scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory over Connecticut in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and graduated as the winningest player in the history of the program (58 wins in four years).

In addition to the team success, Yovino pulled in numerous individual accolades. She was a third-team All-American selection from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and a first-team ESPN Academic All-American selection from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). She earned the Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year Award and was the Nassau County Sports Commission's Female College Athlete of the Year.

After graduating with a 3.69 grade point average as a dual major in history and early childhood education, Yovino became the first-ever Hofstra student-athlete to earn an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. She will serve as a graduate assistant with the Hofstra women’s soccer program this fall.
