Woj Selected as Coach of the Week by NY Giants

East football coach honored for 3-0 start and resurgence in Suffolk.

It could be the 3-0 start. It could be the invigorated passion and desire he flushed into his football program. It could be the about face attitude and ability of his players, turning last year's 0-8 season and 15-game losing streak into distant memories.

Chalk up all of the aforementioned traits as to why Sachem East football coach Mark Wojciechowski was selected by the New York Giants as the “The Lou Rettino High School Football Coach of the Week” presented by BP, as announced this week by Sachem Director of Athletics Pete Blieberg.

Wojciechowski, who took over as head coach of the program this past off-season, will be presented with a certificate from Giants coach Tom Coughlin and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The Giants also will donate $1,000 to the Sachem East football program.

According to the Giants, Wojciechowski will be acknowledged by a stadium announcement when the Giants host the Seattle Seahawks on Oct. 9 and an announcement will also be posted on the Giants website.

The organization said each week they'll select one coach fom the area for the honor based on the coach’s continuing commitment towards promoting youth football, developing motivated student-athletes and his overall community involvement.  At the conclusion of the 2011 season, the Giants will choose a Coach of the Year.

“We are proud of the job Mark and his staff have done,” Blieberg said.

Fred Fusaro was named NFL High School Coach of the Week in 1996, the only other time an honor like this has been achieved by a Sachem football coach.

Sometime after the Super Bowl, Wojciechowski will be invited to a luncheon to honor all winners from the 2011 season.

Sachem East is looking to go 4-0 as the Arrows host Ward Melville this Saturday at 6 p.m.
