West Islip Hands Sachem North First Loss of Season

Boys lacrosse team falls to Lions 14-3 Wednesday; Sachem East up next.

Two years ago Sachem North rocked Suffolk's lacrosse world with an overtime road win over West Islip.

On Wednesday, the outcome at West Islip High School was much different as the Flaming Arrows fell to the Lions 14-3.

Sachem North, which entered the game 5-0, came out strong and took an early 1-0 lead as midfielder Shane deBoer found the back of the cage only 1:10 into the first quarter. In fact, the Flaming Arrows defense held tight and kept West Islip’s potent offense off the scoreboard for nearly 8 minutes in the first.

In spite of Sachem’s early strong defensive play, West Islip’s offense stayed patient. A goal by Brendan Smith with 3:21 remaining in the first quarter knotted the game at 1 and sent West Islip on a five-goal spurt with Tom Moore (twice), Ryan Wieczorek and Nick Aponte beating Sachem North netminder Brendan Schade.

West Islip went to the half with a 7-2 lead and its consistent offensive play and continued strong defensive play kept Sachem from mounting any kind of rally.
