VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Boomer Esiason Talks About 1978 Championship Loss to Sachem

East Islip native was 4-for-11 passing against Sachem in the loss.

While attending the media sessions for this year's Empire Challenge all-star football game, run by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, Sachem Patch caught up with Esiason and chatted about the former NFL quarterback's championship loss to Sachem in 1978.

Esiason blamed a rib injury for his weak performance, which consisted of going 4-for-11 passing for just 33 yards. Famously, East Islip only crossed the 50-yard line once in the contest, which Sachem won, 15-0. It was Sachem's second of three straight Suffolk County titles.

East Islip went on to win the Rutgers Trophy as the best team in Suffolk, its only blemish being the loss to Sachem.

"Every time I'm in Boomer's company he brings that game up," said former Sachem coach Fred Fusaro. "We shut him down. They didn't cross the 50. Nobody gave us a chance to beat them."

Ironically, current Sachem Athletic Director Pete Blieberg has been the game coordinator for the Empire Challenge since its inception 16 years ago. Esiason praises Blieberg in the video for his efforts in helping make the game a success.

Esiason, of course, has helped raise over $100 million in his foundation's fight against cystic fibrosis and played 14 years in the NFL.
