This Week in Sachem Football: Week 2

A historical look at the Flaming Arrows on the gridiron.

Every week I'll breakdown each game and what it means from a historical perspective in the football programs at Sachem North and East. As the season progresses, the numbers and statistics become more and more interesting, but here's the information from Week 2:

  • Sachem is 25-10 all-time against Lindenhurst. Its first game dates back to 1972. Sachem won 11 straight contests from 1976-1987. The Flaming Arrows have also won seven of the last 11 games dating back to 1999.
  • Sachem has outscored Lindenhurst 697-459, all-time.
  • Their last meeting before Friday's game was a 44-7 Sachem loss in 2008.
  • Sachem is 29-21-1 all-time in Week 2 games. It has won six of its last 11, but only twice in the last seven seasons (2009, 2010).
  • In Week 2 games, Sachem has scored 34 or more points just four other times in program history: 1977 (44), 1978 (36), 1997 (37) and 2003 (34).
  • Sachem has started a season off 2-0 only 14 other seasons since the program began 49 seasons ago. This is the fifth time in the last 10 years the team has started 2-0.
  • Dating back to the final game of the 2008 season, North has won 13 of its last 14 games.
  • In his first eight seasons as head coach, Fred Fusaro's record was 29-32-1, while North head coach Dave Falco sports a 35-29 mark.
  • Mike McCarthy scored his first touchdown since he was 8-years-old in Friday's win.
