This Week in Sachem Football: Week 1

A historical look at the Flaming Arrows on the gridiron.

Every week I'll breakdown each game and what it means from a historical perspective in the football programs at Sachem North and East. As the season progresses, the numbers and statistics become more and more interesting, but here's the information from Week 1:

Sachem North 33, Patchogue-Medford 7

  • Sachem is 28-17-2 all-time against Pat-Med. Its first game dates back to 1962, a 21-0 Patchogue win. Sachem was only in its second varsity season ever at that point.
  • Sachem has outscored Pat-Med, 756-689 all-time.
  • Their last meeting was in 2008, a 41-0 Sachem win.
  • It's just the fourth time in program history that the Arrows have scored 33 or more points in a Week 1 game.
  • Sachem is 27-24 all-time in Week 1 games. It has won nine of the last 10 and five in a row.
  • Dating back to the final game of the 2008 season, North has won 12 of its last 13 games.
  • An interesting note, Trent Crossan became just the third player in Sachem football history to officially start a game as a freshman. He follows in the footsteps of Jesse Brush (Class of '99) and Jesse Scanna (currently playing).
  • In his first eight seasons as head coach, Fred Fusaro's record was 28-32-1, while North head coach Dave Falco sports a 34-29 mark.

Central Islip 43, Sachem East 7

  • East is 2-5 all-time in Week 1 games.
  • East is 4-2 all-time against Central Islip.
  • This is the fifth time in school history that a team has scored 43 or more points against East, and the most ever in an opening season game.

Next up: North will play host to Lindenhurst (1-0), who has been playing hard fought games against the Flaming Arrows since 1972. East will host Patchogue-Medford (0-1). Check Sachem Patch's Week 2 previews for historical data on Lindy and Pat-Med.
