This Week in Sachem Football: Suffolk County Quarterfinals, 2011

A historical look at the Flaming Arrows on the gridiron.

Every week I'll breakdown each game and what it means from a historical perspective in the football programs at Sachem North and East. As the season progresses, the numbers and statistics become more and more interesting, but here's the information from this week:

  • The win is the first playoff victory in Sachem East history.
  • It's the first win against West Islip in school history.
  • It's the first time Sachem East has scored a point in the playoffs. Their only previous playoff game was a 33-0 loss to William Floyd in 2008.
  • The victory marks a program record for wins in a season with 6.
  • Sachem East is playing in its first Big Four setting in school history, as it takes on Sachem North next week.
  • This is the highest scoring team in school history as well.
  • The Casali File: Steven Casali has compiled 1,348 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns this year. His 40 carries Saturday were a season and career-high.

  • The Flaming Arrows have won 29 of their last 32 games dating back to 2008.
  • This is only the seventh team in Sachem history to win eight or more games in a season. There are only three more who have won 9 games.
  • Sachem has now scored 327 points this season, the third most in school history. Next up is the 2009 team with 358 points. The record is 421 set in 2010.
  • The 184 points allowed are the sixth most in program history as well.
  • The quarterfinal game was Sachem's 50th appearance in a playoff game: 28-22 all-time.
  • The 35 points are the fifth most points scored by Sachem in a playoff game. The record is 42 set in 2009 (Brentwood) and tied in 2010 (Brentwood and Northport).
  • Sachem is now 32-18-2 all-time against Pat-Med and has outscored the Raiders, 899-691. In the playoffs, Sachem leads Pat-Med, 3-2.
  • The Dalton Crossan File: With his 146 yards, Crossan (27 TDs and 1,727 rushing yards in 2011 - tops on Long Island) currently has 2,701 career yards, good enough for No. 2 all-time in Sachem history. Next on the list is No. 1 James O'Neal (3,786). If you add in his numbers from two varsity seasons at Shoreham, he has 3,745 career yards as a high school football player. Currently he also has the third highest single-season yardage right now in Sachem history. He has 42 career rushing touchdowns, four away from tying O'Neals mark and five from breaking it. Crossan also ranks No. 16 all-time in Suffolk County history in rushing yards and No. 23 in Long Island history. Crossan is tied with Floyd's Brock Jackolski for fifth all-time in Suffolk and Long Island history in total career touchdowns (64).
