This Week in Sachem Football 2011: Week 2

A historical look at the Flaming Arrows on the gridiron.

Every week we'll breakdown each game and what it means from a historical perspective in the football programs at Sachem North and East. As the season progresses, the numbers and statistics become more and more interesting, but here's the information from Week 2:

  • The win marks the first time since 2008 that Sachem has won consecutive games (Weeks 6 and 7).
  • This is the first time in school history the varsity started the season 2-0.
  • It's also the first time in school history the varsity and JV are 2-0.
  • Sachem East has scored more points in these first two opening games, than ever before to open a season through Week 2.
  • East is one of four Suffolk County teams to go 0-8 in 2010 and win one or two games in 2011 already.
  • Sachem East is 2-6 all-time in Week 2 games.
  • The Steven Casali File: So far this season, Casali, a junior, has rushed 33 times for 234 yards and 5 touchdowns in two games.

  • Sachem improved to 30-20-1 in Week 2 games.
  • Sachem has won seven of its last 12 Week 2 games, but only three times in the last seven seasons (2009, 2010, 2011).
  • In Week 2 games, Sachem has scored 42 or more points just one other time in program history: 1977 (44).
  • Sachem has started a season off 2-0 only 15 other seasons since the program began 50 years ago. This is the sixth time in the last 10 years the team has started 2-0.
  • The game against Northport made for the 11th highest combined point total in program history with 67. The record is 83 set in 2009 against Brentwood.
  • Sachem is 19-3-2 all-time against Northport dating back to their first game in 1975. The Flaming Arrows have won nine of their last 11 contests against the Tigers.
  • Sachem has outscored Northport, 629-344, overall.
  • Sachem has won 23 of its last 25 games dating back to the final game of the 2008 season.
  • The Dalton Crossan File: With his 210 yards and four touchdowns, Crossan currently has 1,326 yards, good enough for No. 14 all-time in Sachem history. If you add in his numbers from two varsity seasons at Shoreham, he has 2,370 career yards as a high school football player. He needs 205 yards to crack the top 10 at Sachem, which would bounce former teammate Jesse Scanna out to 11. Crossan's four touchdowns tie a personal best, which he set last season in the semifinals against Northport and in Week 1 against Bay Shore.

Next Up ... Week 3: Sachem East travels to Commack (1-1) on Saturday, September 24 and Sachem North hosts West Islip (2-0) on Friday, September 23 for homecoming.
