SEVFH Wins Semifinal Match, Advances to State Championship

Wins on penalty strokes in Syracuse against undefeated Greene HS.

If you listened closely, you could hear the screams from Syracuse down here in the Sachem community.

That was the sound of jubilation as the Sachem East field hockey team beat Green High School (Section IV), 2-1, on penalty strokes after double overtime in the New York State Class A semifninals Saturday at Cicero-North High School.

Sachem East (20-1) advances to the state championship Sunday morning against Mamaroneck.

Sachem has never played on Astroturf, so it took an entire half to get used to the playing surface, Sachem coach Tina Moon said.

"We slowly started to get our groove," she said via cell phone from Syracuse.

Sachem's Katie Doherty scored with 6:16 left in regulation to tie the score at 1.

The Arrows dominated the entire second half and two overtime periods.

"We outplayed them both times, we just couldn’t put the ball in the net," Moon said. "We felt very confident going into strokes, having practiced that a lot this year. In that situation it could go either way but we felt like we were prepared. "

Sachem ventually won on penalty strokes with goals from Katie Trombetta, Jessica Caruana and Kristen Bagley. Jordan Miller

Greene, who was undefeated with a 17-0 record prior to losing to Sachem, missed its first two stroke shots and hit the cage on the last one. Jordan Miller was in net during strokes.

"We were out of our minds, running to Jordan," Moon said. "It was a really nice moment."

This would be Sachem's first team state title since the Sachem East girls basketball team won in 2009.

"They never gave up," Moon said. "We were losing 1-0 for a very long time. It’s a good feeling. I was really proud of them. Not once did they ever give up."
