SEPTA Lacrosse Clinic a Success

Held at Seneca, kids ran around with sticks and smiles Saturday.

A little over a dozen children of all ages showed up at this year's SEPTA lacrosse clinic at Seneca Middle School.

Coach Tom Behrens taught some of the basics of lacrosse including passing and shooting.

"Coach Tom is really great with the kids,"  said Beverley Burke, whose son David participated for the second time. "If it weren't Coach Tom, David would never have an opportunity to do things like this."

Laura Slattery, the correspondent secretary of SEPTA, said she runs the clinic with Behrens. Previously Slattery was the director of the lacrosse league in SYAG, though she retired two years ago she still helps out with the league and events like this. This is the third year that the lacrosse camp is being held in the summer, they will also have indoor lacrosse camps this fall and winter.

Slattery's son Michael has been playing lacrosse for Behrens since he was 5-yerars old.

"Michael (whose position is goaltender) played for Samoset Middle School this year and next year he will be playing on the Sachem North JV Travel Team," she said. "It's really great for him because he has been able to really integrate into the school's population, even though he attends classes in a contained classroom."

Michael was assisting Behrens at Saturday's clinic as a goalie as the children took their turns trying to score on him.

Judy Notarstefano's son Matt also participated in the clinic, who Slattery said, "was another success story."

Behrens previously was the Commissioner of the SYAG lacrosse program for six years. He continues to participate and coaches all three clinics that are held throughout the year.

SEPTA has a clinic for every sport except football, but they are hoping for one in the future.

The clinic concluded with the children gathering around Behrens, raising their sticks and letting out a huge cheer celebrating the day's success.
