Sean O’Malley Wins Greco-Roman State Title

Maryland-bound wrestler captures second straight championship.

Sachem East senior and future Maryland wrestler Sean O’Malley captured his second Greco-Roman New York State Wrestling title this past weekend in Binghamton, N.Y.

O’Malley won the 152-pound title at the USA wrestling sponsored state championships. His victory has qualified him to represent New York in two of the nation’s toughest and most prestigious high school tournaments: the Junior National duals to be held in Oklahoma in late June features all-star teams from each state competing in dual meets to see which state is the best in the country; and the Junior National Championships to be held in late July in Fargo, N.D.

That tournament features multiple wrestlers from each state in each weight class battling it out to be a National Champ or All-American.

Greco-Roman is one of the two wrestling styles wrestled in the Olympics. In Greco wrestlers are only permitted to use upper body holds as opposed to the leg attack take downs that are prevalent in high school wrestling.
