Sachem North Wrestling Wins League I Dual Meet Title on Technicality

Ineligible Brentwood wrestler costs Indians, helps Sachem grab crown.

A Brentwood wrestler has been deemed ineligible by his district’s athletic department, which gives Sachem North the League I dual meet title for the 2011-12 season.

According to letter sent to League I athletic directors from Brentwood Athletic Director Kevin O’Reilly, one Indians' wrestler was ineligible to participate this season.

“This athlete repeated 11th grade in 2010-11 and was in his fifth year of eligibility,” O'Reilly wrote in the letter.

The League I dual meet records were affected:

  • Sachem North, 5-1 League 1 Dual meet Champions
  • Longwood, 4-2 League 1 Tournament Champions
  • Brentwood, 3-3
  • Wm Floyd, 3-3
  • Pat-Med, 2-4
  • Ward Melville, 2-4
  • Commack, 2-4

“This is totally unexpected,” said Sachem wrestling coach Ray Pickersgill. “I have known the Brentwood coaches for years and they always do the right thing. This comes as a shock and obviously they must not have had any idea about this.”

According to Pickersgill, the Brentwood wrestler did not wrestle any matches against Sachem North this season.

Prior to this announcement, Brentwood won the dual meet championship, League I tournament and Suffolk County tournament.

“It’s unfortunate that it had to happen this way, you never want to win a league title on a technicality,” Pickersgill said, “but I will accept it for the Sachem North wrestlers and all the hard work they put in.”
