Sachem North Alum and Hofstra Pride junior defender Brittany Farriella helped the women's soccer team power past UNC Wilmington with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win, securing the team's inclusion in the NCAA tournament this year.
Hofstra captured its third CAA Championship title in its history when sophomore Sam Scolarici's 12-yard shot found the back of the net 3:39 into double-overtime yesterday afternoon. The game was played at William and Mary's Martin Family Stadium in Williamsburg, VA.
Another Long Islander, Lulu Echeverry, of East Meadow, banged in the opening goal of the game during regulation, and assisted on the winning goal from Scolarici.
The victory not only secured a Colonial Athletic Assocation crown; it now puts the team in position to await its first-round opponent for the NCAA Tournament. The tournament brackets will be unveiled today at 4:30 p.m.
Fifth-seeded Hofstra won all three of its CAA tournament games on the road, and finished the season with a record of 11-8-2. Farriella began her varsity career at Sachem North in the eigth grade and earned All-County and All-League honors while defending for the Flaming Arrows.
