Sachem has Combined Seven All-County Selections

Football players from North and East attend annual dinner.

For the most part, Sachem's football players left Thursday's dinner the same way they entered ... empty handed.

After numerous nominations for prime awards at the annual Suffolk County Football Coaches Association get together, no players took home honors above their All-County selections.

Sachem East's lone All-County nominee was lineman Lucas Brum, who was also recognized as a National Football Foundation Golden 11 selection, meaning he is one of the top scholar athlete football players in Suffolk.

Instead, Connetquot's Mike Pellegrino, a player Sachem held to just 36 yards in a 45-0 shutout during the 2010 season, won the Hansen and Islip's Alex Gavira won the Collatta.

Scanna did win the Division I MVP, while Armine was named MVP of the Suffolk County Division I championship after rushing for a season-high 265 yards. Sachem head coach was named Division I Coach of the Year.

Thompson was nominated for the Zellner Award as Suffolk's top lineman, but that honor was given to James Walsh from William Floyd.

John Glenn was awarded the Rutger's Trophy as Suffolk County's top team for the second time in school history, beating out Bellport and Floyd. Sachem alum and Glenn head coach Dave Shanahan was recognized as the Suffolk County and Division IV Coach of the Year.

The county honor was extra special because the award was named to honor  this year. Fusaro is Shanahan's assistant at Glenn, and a legendary head coach from his days at the helm of Sachem's program.

"I'm truly blessed and humbled by this recognition," said Fusaro, who won Rutger's Trophies with Sachem in 1977 and 1986, the second which Shanahan was a part of as a player.
