Football Teams Still Waiting for Playoff Seedings

East and North not sure who their opponents will be in Suffolk County Quarterfinals.

Bay Shore beat William Floyd, 24-7, Saturday afternoon, throwing a wrench into the entire Suffolk County Division I playoff picture.

Northport and West Islip's game was postponed until Sunday morning, so Section XI was not able to release the official seeds for the playoffs, which begin Friday evening. West Islip beat Northport, 41-0.

Sachem North (7-1) has clinched the top seed and a Division I regular season title with its 53-28 win over Lindenhurst in Week 8.

Sachem East (5-3) guaranteed itself a playoff spot with a 22-6 win over Brentwood on Friday and will most likely be seeded No. 6.

Here's what we know: Sachem North is one, Longwood is two. Other than that, things are unclear. West Islip finished 7-1 and should be higher than Floyd, but the Lions may not have enough power points to crack the top three.

Here's the unknown: William Floyd, who was presumed as the third seed for the last month, may get pushed back to four. Bay Shore will make the playoffs now and could be as high as seven. Pat-Med or Northport will get the final spot at No. 8, most likely. Yes, if William Floyd is No. 4, then Sachem North will have to play them in the Suffolk County Semifinals if things work out that way. It will be a battle for the Hansen Award and a clearer path for either team to win a county championship.

Northport and Pat-Med have only beaten one potential playoff team each this season. We'll let Section XI figure out the math on that last playoff spot.

Something to chew on: Bay Shore held Floyd's Stacey Bedell to 13 yards on 15 carries in Week 8. Sachem's Dalton Crossan rushed 22 times for a career-high 285 yards and 5 touchdowns. Crossan and Bedell are the only players in Suffolk this season to rush for 5 touchdowns in one game.

Other football tidbits: The only division with playoff brackets in Suffolk so far is Division IV. John Glenn, led by Sachem alum Dave Shanahan and Sachem legend Fred Fusaro, is the top seed again. Glenn is the defending Suffolk County Division IV, Long Island Class IV and Rutgers Trophy champion. Mt. Sinai, led by Sachem alum Vinny Ammirato, grabbed the third seed.

If the projections (below) work out ... Sachem East will travel to West Islip for a first round battle. West Islip already shut Sachem out once this year and are coming into this game fired up with its lastest 41-0 regular season finale win over Northport. Sachem North will host Pat-Med. Both games would be Friday evening. Sachem has not played Pat-Med since Week 1 of 2010, but those battles are always lively with the neighboring rivalry aspect very well present. Remember that game? Dalton Crossan opened his Sachem career and the contest with a kick off return for a touchdown.
