Sachem Finds Offensive Groove, Trounces East Islip

Gamblin and Crossan lead Sachem with four goals each, Arrows improve to 8-2 overall.

Sachem North turned on its offensive switch and sent a message to Division I that the Arrows will be putting up double-digit goals down the stretch.

After a lull and recent losses to West Islip and Smithtown West, the Arrows hammered East Islip, 14-7, at Fred Fusaro Alumni Stadium Friday afternoon just in time for next week's showdown against rival Ward Melville.

Senior Brandon Gamblin and junior Dalton Crossan each scored a team-high four goals in the win for Sachem (8-2 overall, 6-2 Division I).

Aside from Kevin Wendel’s opening goal at the 11:17 mark which sent a wave of nausea through Sachem’s stands and a collective gasp of “please no, not again” feeling, the game was maintained and controlled by the Arrows, who went on a 6-0 run and never looked back.

Wendel led East Islip (8-2, 6-2) with four goals and one assist. He was followed by Tyler Begley who scored both of his goals in the second quarter to bring the Red Men within four goals at 7-3, their slimmest deficit of the day.

“We played Sachem North lacrosse, came out with high-powered offense and didn’t care who we were playing,” said Gamblin, who scored three straight goals to open the second quarter.

Michael Andreassi scored three goals and looked good shooting high percentage shots.

“We had to get back to that team offense we know how to play and today it really showed,” he said.

Sachem coach Jay Mauro switched things around on the field, moving Crossan to midfield and Shawn Murphy to attack. He also gave more field time to Kyle Rhatigan, who scored twice, and Angelo Armine.

“The good thing about us is we’re not anywhere near where we should be,” Mauro said. “We want to peak middle, end of May, beginning of June in the Suffolk County and state playoffs.”

Sachem and Ward Melville will square off Tuesday at 4:15. Check Sachem Patch for complete coverage.
