Sachem East's Dylan Caruso, Long Island Baseball Team Capture Gold Medal at Empire State Games

Powerful lefty helps LI bunch take reigns as best group in the state.

Sachem East senior Dylan Caruso helped the Long Island baseball team capture a Gold Medal at the Empire State Games in Buffalo this weekend.

The Long Island team went 5-0 and won two games Thursday and Friday and one game Saturday. The intended Gold Medal game scheduled for Saturday night was rained out and Long Island won Gold by sporting the best overall record.

Caruso pitched a complete-game two-hitter and struck out six in a 4-1 victory over New York City on Friday night.

"I enjoyed the opportunity to compete with the best players in New York State," he said via email. "My team featured many of the most talented high school baseball players on Long Island, guys that I will be competing against next spring."

Caruso also said the Long Island team was equipped with some of the most explosive offensive players in the state, which helped when scoring runs.

"I am glad I was able to experience the dorm life at the University of Buffalo," added Caruso, who was quick to thank his coaches and the team parents for their support. "It will help me prepare to see what college life is like."

He is one of more than 40 athletes from the Sachem community who competed at the games.
