Sachem East's Brittany Christiansen Expanding on Track & Field Career

Adds weight and hammer throw into the mix.

Two weeks ago, Brittany Christiansen competed in the St. Anthony's High School Girls Developmental meet to get an official 20-pound weight throw distance.

She has been throwing the weight well in training since August, and during the meet she fouled on her first and third throws, but on her second try landed a 38' 10" throw of the weight.

Though the weight throw is not a recognized event in the public schools, Christiansen, who attends Sachem East, has been working on learning it, along with the eight-pound hammer throw, since last summer.

Bernard Hanson, a coach at Longwood High School, has encouraged her, after she competed in shot put at the 2010 in Buffalo.

Imani White, a senior at Longwood, and Christiansen, have practiced together in the hammer and weight throws but not in shot put or discus, as they compete against each other in both winter and spring seasons in those events.

With the St. Anthony's experience in the books, she is looking to do well, in both the shot put and weight throw relay events this week when the Sachem East girls varsity track team heads off to Providence to compete in the Rhode Island Classic.
