Sachem East Wrestling Club Places 5th at NHSCA Eastern Nationals Duals

Three Sachem wrestlers turn in 7-0 performances in first annual event.

The Sachem East wrestling club finished fifth at the first annual Eastern National duals in Calverton at Southbay Sports Complex.

The event was the first national level high school event on Long Island and was attended by 20 teams representing nine states including a team from Michigan.

The two-day event opened with pool competition running on eight mats throughout the day on Saturday with each team wrestling four dual meets against the other teams in their pool. Sachem East went 3 -1 on day one, defeating Silver Back WC, 48 -22, Rocky Point, 51-18, and the talented Iowa Style WC., 33-21.

In the victory over Iowa Style, Sachem junior Anthony Pistone defeated Ryan O’Sleeb from Salem High School, who was a New York State D-2 Champion in February.

Sachem’s lone defeat on day one was a 38-21 loss to Team Titan, an All-Star team from the Albany area. With its three wins on the first day, Sachem advanced to the championship pool on day two. On Sunday, Sachem was 2-1 defeating NE Elite WC, 40-18, and Summit WC, 50-15.

In the victory over Summit Jackson, Jackson Mordente defeated a Massachusetts state champion. Sachem lost to the Michigan Freeze, 38-12, but Mike Rothbaum beat a Michigan state champ in the meet.

Sachem finished 5-2 in the prestigious event. The tournament was the final event for the spring for the Sachem East WC which has been training Tuesday and Thursday evenings since March with practices being run by Sachem coach Isaac Ramaswamy. 

Sachem East senior Rob Seder was named the teams Outstanding Wrestler for the event. Seder, a 2011 League Champ and All-County wrestler went 7-0 over the two days wrestling at both 160 and 171. Senior Frank “the tank” Merante, and junior Mike Rothbaum also turned in undefeated 7-0 performances.
