Sachem East Goalie Enjoys a Day in the Sun

Field hockey team cruises past Newfield, 7 - 0, in summer league play.

Sachem East goalie Jordan Miller got a workout when her Flaming Arrows faced off against Newfield in recent summer league play. Not that she faced many (any?) shots. Rather, each time Sachem scored, Miller dashed up to midfield to slap sticks with a teammate. That happened early, and often in a 7 - 0 win.

Returning to Ward Melville High School - where summer league games are held - Sachem certainly remembers the last time they stepped onto this field: last November, they lost in the Suffolk County Class A finals to the Patriot's 1 - 0, in overtime.

Miller was the goalie in that contest. After not starting in goal during the regular season, Miller had back-to-back shutouts in quarter- and semi-final action. A junior this fall, Miller said she started playing goalie as a deck hockey player.

"I played field hockey when I was [in elementary school] then stopped," she said. "I picked it up again in middle school."

For anyone wondering whether the deck hockey-turned-field hockey goalie ever played ice hockey, Miller assures them that ice hockey is not her sport.

"Oh no, I'm not that coordinated," she said.
