Sachem East Girls Track Qualifies 8 for State Meet

East Arrows set numerous school records at State Qualifier.

It was a great way to finish up the season. Run or throw personal bests. Break school records, and, of course, send a few athletes to the State Meet.

So indeed, it was a great overall team performance for the ladies of Sachem East, but not exactly the end of the season for some of these hard working and talented Track and Field Athletes. A few will be competing in the State Meet in Syracuse this weekend and some will even get the chance to compete one more time, traveling to Indianapolis the following weekend for the Junior National Meet. Here are some highlights of the State Qualifier.

In the Discus, both Brittany Sepe and Diamond Jackson broke Sepe's school record, pacing 3rd and 4th overall, but Jackson's 118'6 will stand as the new record and earned her the spot on the state bus. In the Shot, Jackson and Gabby Trejo placed 6th and 7th, but Brittany Sepe threw 36'8" and will be one of the three Suffolk Girls qualifying in that event. Rachel Paul won the 1500 and teamed up with Laurie Semetsis, Nicole Silvestre and blazing anchor leg Melanie Notarstefano to win the 4 by 800 relay in a school record 9:12.89.

Holly Lindoe, Alyssa Furlani, Amanda Catherall, and Sarah LaPorta took places 4, 6, 8, and 15th, as Lindoe also broke 7 minutes and joins Maranchuck to be ranked top 10 in the nation. The whole Racewalking squad can be seen in action this Sunday at the Maria Michta Walkathon, where they will compete in a Championship 5K race.

A number of other athletes concluded their excellent seasons with outstanding performances at the meet. Shannon Haberkorn made the finals in the 100 Hurdles, and Ally Figalora did the same in the 400 hurdles. Both placed 8th in their event. Kaitlin DiMartino took 22nd in the 800, Shannon O'Hehir 12th in the 1500, and Danielle Vasquez ran a personal best 10:51.70 to place 14th in the 3000.

The 4 by 100 team of Ebony Lewis, Essence Sterling, Ashley Mercado and Amanda Sluzewski placed 15th. The 4 by 400 relay of Figalora, Paul, Notarstefano, and Jayda Allen placed 6th, with Allen breaking 60 for her 400 split.

The State Federation Championship Meet will be held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School with the Girls traveling to Syracuse Thursday and competing both Friday and Saturday.
