Sachem East Girls Compete at Penn Relays

Arrows set school records at prestigious event.

Members from the Sachem East girls track and field team competed at the Penn Relays Thursday one of the biggest meets in the country.  

The 4x400-meter relay team of junior Melanie Notarstefano (60.8s), senior Ashley Ayers (62.3s), freshman Nicole Silvestre (62.2), and sophomore Laurie Semetsis (61.5s) broke East's school record with a time of 4:06.85.  

The 4x100-meter relay team of freshman Ebonie Lewis, sophomore Ashley Mercado, sophomore Essence Sterling, and senior Alyssa Genduso also broke a school record in a time of 50.84.

Ayers in the 4x400 and Genudso in the 4x100 as the were "leaders and captains,” according to the coaching staff, for their relay squad.

Rachel Paul ran a very strong race in the High School Girls’ Mile Run Championship with a time of 4:57.66 finishing in eighth place. She came back from missing a day of school on Tuesday with a 101-degree fever and a sinus infection and was mentally and physically strong enough to battle back and run a fantastic race.
