Center Moriches club to begin play in 2012.

Last month Sachem baseball coaching legend Bill Batewell was named the manager of the Center Moriches Battlecats, the sixth and newest member of Hamptons Collegiate Baseball.

Batewell, currently the head baseball coach at Bellport High School, won 452 games as the skipper at Sachem from 1975-2005, winning six league titles and two county championships (1979 and 1987). He was inducted into the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame two years ago.

The Battlecats also have Ed Morris Sr., a Sachem alum and the Executive Director of the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame, as their general manager.

According to Batewell, team ownership is high on showcasing Long Island talent.

“It’s going to be a pretty exciting time,” he said. “Myself and the coaching staff are excited about the opportunity. We’ll try and show up and be affective to promote Long Island guys and Long Island baseball.”
