Sachem Athletes of the Week

A spotlight on the best of the best.

The following athletes had exceptional weeks on the field at Sachem High Schools East and North:

Sachem East

Sachem East Wrestling: The Sachem East wrestling team finished up a successful 2010-2011 season by finishing fifth out of 44 teams in the Suffolk County Championships. The Arrows sent 11 wrestlers into the competition and all of them wrestled with great intensity. Four Sachem East wrestlers battled their way to All-County Honors.

Sachem was led by two of their senior captains – Sean O’Malley – 145 lbs. and Frank Merante – 171 lbs.  Both won their first three matches to advance to the county finals before dropping close decisions to finish second in Suffolk. O'Malley received a wild card birth to the New York State championships and will be competing for All-State honors next weekend in Albany.

Fellow senior captain Rob Seder also capped off a great season and fought his way to the podium, finishing fifth at 152 lbs. Seder won his first two matches and then lost a close four-point decision to the No. 1 ranked wrestler in New York in the semis. He battled through a badly swollen knee to finish in fifth place and finished as a League I champ and All-County wrestler.

Sachem East junior Anthony Pistone turned in a strong performance finishing fifth at 140 to earn All-County honors. His hard work has paid off as he progressed from not placing in last year’s league tournament to being one of Suffolk’s best, Sachem East head coach Sean O'Hara said.

Finishing the tournament just one round away from placing were junior Billy Merone (135)  and sophomore Conor O’Hara (112). Both Billy and Conor wrestled well and lost close matches in the round to be All-County.

Mark Florian, Tyler Monsees, Anthony Messina, Zach Nobre, and Steven Casali all wrestled tough, represented Sachem well and scored key points in helping us to East's fifth place finish.

Sachem North

Sachem North Girls Basketball: On Saturday, the girls won their opening round playoff game against Eastport-South Manor, beating the Sharks, 52-43, at home. In the first round, the Flaming Arrows (10-8) draw the No. 2 seed in the bracket, North Babylon, last year’s county runner-up. The seventh-seeded Arrows have used the consummate team effort to get this far, using help from Danielle Levine, Erin McNulty, Shayla Cosgrove, Colleen McNeece and every other player on its roster to battle.

Sachem North Boys Basketball: The boys went 5-2 in the last seven games of the League II season, beating co-league champs Central Islip and Walt Whitman down the stretch. They beat Central Islip, 67-61, in the regular season finale and will made a trip to the playoffs this weekend. North's season ended Saturday with a loss to William Floyd in the playoffs.

Sachem Patch wishes all of Sachem's remaining playoff teams the best of luck in the coming week.
