Sachem Alums Face Off in Division I Lax Game

Rutgers-Lafayette has special meaning for Flaming Arrows faithful.

For the first time in history, two Sachem alums coached against each other at the Division I level this past weekend.

Rutgers coach Brian Brecht's team squared off against Terry Mangan and his boys from Lafayette. Mangan's assistant, Jay Fautas, is also a Sachem alum.

Rutgers won, 9-6, at the RU Stadium Complex in what was Brecht's first home win with the Scarlet Knights, a program he took over in the off-season. It's also the alma mater of former Sachem coach Rick Mercurio, who Brecht played for and who Mangan coached with. Rutgers is now 3-2 this season, while Lafayette is 2-2.

“I was very impressed with how the team came out of the locker room,” Brecht said in a statement after the game. “You could tell today that they were ready to play. You could see it in their eyes. They were jumping out of their shorts to get out there. I was impressed with how they approached the game."

Next year when the Marquette program gets underway - Joe Amplo is the head coach - there will be three Division I head men's lacrosse coaches from Sachem, making for interesting story lines in the future.
