Sachem Alum Phil Schaefer Named Empire 8 Men's Lax Player of the Week

Scored seven goals and added assist in win against Farmingdale.

Phil Schaefer will forever be ingrained in Sachem history for scoring the game-winning goal against West Islip last season in overtime.

He’s quickly made his mark at the collegiate level, earning Empire 8 Men’s Lacrosse Player of the Week honors for scoring nine goals in two wins this past week.

Schaefer scored a career-high seven goals and added an assist and three ground balls to lead Hartwick to a 15-8 victory over Farmingdale State on Saturday. He finished with two goals, three assists, and four ground balls in the Hawks' 11-5 win over Cobleskill on Thursday.

Schaefer is the last lacrosse player in Sachem history to wear No. 26 and many agree that's the way it should be. Not because it was retired to honor Doug Shanahan and his fantastic career at Sachem, but because Schaefer put together an outstanding season in 2010 and gained the respect of everyone with his big offensive production en route to his First Team All-Sachem Patch selection.

He scored 29 goals, 24 assists, picked up 43 groundballs and eight takeaways his senior year at Sachem.
