Sachem Alum Leads Floyd to Victory

Glenn Davis graduated from Sachem in 1988, coaches Colonials baseball program.

Just as Deer Park girls basketball coach did during last season’s Suffolk County title game to the girls at Sachem East, another Sachem alum sent the baseball team packing Friday.

William Floyd coach Glenn Davis graduated from Sachem in 1988 and has an extensive baseball coaching career, but Friday’s win over Sachem East in the second game of their final series of the season proved to be the dagger for the Arrows, who were eliminated from playoff contention for the fourth straight season.

“It’s nothing special,” he said. “It’s another game. There’s always a soft spot with Sachem, it’s where I grew up.”

Davis played on Sachem’s last Suffolk County baseball championship team as a junior in 1987. He learned from former Sachem coach that pride is a necessary ingredient to building a successful program in any sport and it’s something he’s been trying to do at Floyd since he took over six seasons ago.

He also played football at Sachem and had a great experience under Fred Fusaro.

“Those two guys I learned a ton from,” he said. “I modeled myself after them in taking pride in the program. It was awesome playing there.”

After Sachem he played two seasons at Allegheny Junior College in Maryland and another two seasons at Towson University. He also coached at Towson and at the Naval Academy in Annapolis for seven years.

“The people I met, the friends I still have, it was an amazing place,” he said of his experience at Navy, which ended on his own terms when a coaching change took place at the school.

Friday was career win No. 50 for Davis as a high school coach. Sachem has a chance to knock Floyd out of a playoff spot with a win Saturday.
