Sachem Alum Iannello Working as GA at Wagner

Recent Bryant grad will give college coaching a try.

Sachem North alum and recent Bryant University graduate Anthony Iannello has secured a graduate assistant lacrosse coaching position at Wagner College in Staten Island.

Iannello, who was the captain of the Bryant lacrosse team, will be at Wagner for at least two years, coaching and completing his master’s in business administration.

"Being a graduate assistant at Wagner College while working towards my MBA gives me the ability to develop my coaching abilities while I also try to further my education," he said. "I believe that this two-year period will give me a clear idea as to whether coaching is a potential career path for me. At this point, I am equally interested in the possibility of pursuing coaching or business upon the completion of my masters."

At Bryant, where Iannello earned a handful of honors as a senior for his academic success and leadership ability, he learned from head coach Mike Pressler, one of the more respected coaches in the NCAA.

“He had always suggested to me that I should give coaching a chance,” said Iannello. “When it became evident that I could pursue coaching while working toward my masters, it almost became a no-brainer for me. Wagner has given me an unbelievable opportunity and I look forward to validating their choice.”

Iannello is the second alum to become a coach and have played for Sachem coach Jay Mauro. The first was Bryan Petillo, who coached a girls varsity team in Massachusetts at Westwood High School and a won state title.

“He’s a great kid who I believe will be a great coach,” Mauro said. “He will be diligent in whatever path he chooses, but I truly believe coaching is what he is meant to do.”

They haven't specifically spoken about what his exact responsibilities will be when the seasons begins. His recruiting duties start this weekend.

“I am looking forward to representing Wagner College and doing everything I can to improve the program both for the present and the future,” he said. “I am prepared to contribute to the Wagner program in whichever way Coach Poskay sees fit. I believe that my experience as a Division I defenseman will help me greatly.

“Working with someone as young, talented and accomplished as Coach Poskay is very exciting for me. I believe that I will learn very much from working with him and I look forward to the experience.”
