Sachem Alum Baseball Update

A look at how some baseball players from Sachem are doing this summer.

It's been a difficult and eye-opening year for Sachem's two professional baseball players.

(Class of 2001) is not currently with any major league organization and is home playing for the Long Island Ducks. Billy Alvino (Class of 2005 - East) was released by the Detroit Tigers and is playing independent ball with the Newark Bears.

Parisi is having a very respectable season with the Ducks, sporting a 5-3 record in 11 games started. Through July 4 he has a 3.84 ERA with 67 strikeouts compared to 26 walks.

The 67 strikeouts are third in the Atlantic League and only five other pitchers in the league have more wins.

Alvino is hitting .290 with one homer and 11 RBI in 30 games with the Bears. He has recorded 31 hits in 30 games and is coming on strong.

Last season he had back surgery and started the year at the high-A affiliate of the Tigers, but he and the organization decided to mutually part ways early on. He signed with Newark shortly after.

Sachem has one player participating in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League this summer. , who won two consecutive titles with Briafcliffe College, is playing on the Sag Harbor Whalers. He is hitting .266 with five doubles and nine RBI.

The HCBL is funded partly by Major League Baseball and is similar to the Cape Cod league in that college players are hoping to get spotted by pro scouts and retool for their upcoming collegiate school years.
