Ronkonkoma's Gregg Sarra Gets Nod to Suffolk Hall

Newsday sportswriter, MSG Varsity executive producer among eight inductees for 2012.

Longtime Newsday sportswriter Gregg Sarra is among eight inductees to this year's class at the Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame.

Sarra, who resides in Ronkonkoma and is an alumnus of Newfield High School and Dowling College, serves as the high school sports editor at Newsday and Long Island executive producer of MSG Varsity.

"I am extremely honored that the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame is recognizing my life's work," Sarra told Newsday. "I look around 26 years from the start of my Newsday career and see how successful so many student-athletes have become and it's incredible. It's been a rewarding career path."

The  of Fame announced its Class of 2012 inductees last week. Aside from Sarra, individuals from six sports will be honored on May 3 at Patchogue’s .

Other inductees include brothers Chris and Peter Ferraro, who played in more than 150 NHL games, including time spent with the New York Rangers.

Former Dowling and Hofstra men’s basketball coach Dick Berg, who took the Lions to four NAIA Tournaments and won nine conference titles, is on this year’s inductee honor roll.

Lindenhurst is well represented with baseball coach Mike Canobbio and wrestling coach Joe Russo each getting nods. Canobbio won his 500thgame last season and Russo, who also wrestled at Lindenhurst, was a coach with the Bulldogs from 1979-2004.

Other athletes include Olympian Anthony Famiglietti, who was a track star at Patchogue-Medford and was a six-time U.S. champion in the steeplechase, and former professional boxer and Greenlawn native Matt Farrago, who was 25-2-1 in his career.
