Red, Black & Gold Scoreboard: May 4

A daily look at the sports action around Sachem.

Sachem East Boys Tennis: Sachem 4, Ward Melville 3 ... East improves to 9-2 after a tough win over the Patriots. All 3 double matches were very exciting and hard fought, unfortunately East seemed to fall short in all three, according to East coach Stefano Massimo. That wasn't the case at singles. At first singles, Jason Quintana  won convincingly against Max Tcherevik, Ward Melville's top singles player, 6-1, 6-2 . Zach Cooper disposed of Kevin Kim 6-0, 6-2 at second singles, while at third singles, Dylan Quintana defeated Prashent Kota in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5.  The most exciting match of the day came at fourth singles, where once again the outcome of the overall match was on the shoulders of sophomore Alex Rosenfield.  For the second time this season, Rosenfield found himself about to begin a third set knowing the overall score was tied 3-3,  making his match the deciding point. After dropping the first set 4-6, Alex  had to come from behind to win the second set 7-6. Then in the third set, with his teammates cheering him on,  he began to hit his shots and won 6-4 against a very tough, very talented opponent in Antua Averin, winning the overall match for East 4 to 3.  Wednesday the team travels to Bayport-Blue Point and will finish its regular season against another very though opponent.

Sachem North Boys Track & Field: Sachem 80, Northport 61 ... The Sachem North boys track team remains undefeated as it threw, jumped, and ran its way to another exhilarating league victory over a highly talented Northport squad. Zach Coleman took pole vault at 10-feet 6-inches and Ryan "Bulldog" Sampson won shot with 46 feet, seven inches and a whopping 140 feet, seven inches in disc. Dayvon Christopher won the 200 in twenty-two-nine while Davon Lawrence took first in the 100 with eleven-three. Connor Dolan completed his two mile victory in ten-fifteen, while Joe Johnson took the 400 in fifty-two-five and Brian Wersan strode to victory in the 800 with a time of two minutes and two seconds. For the second meet in a row, the relentless four by four, consisting of Johnson, Weilbacker, Christopher, and Wersan, clinched the victory with an impressive time of three minutes and twenty-seven seconds.  The Black & Gold will look to clinch sole possession of the league championship and an undefeated season as they take on Connetquot next Thursday.

Sachem North Baseball: Sachem 6, Northport 5 ... Mike Turo had a two-out, run-scoring single in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score at five and Alec Sole came home with the winning run on a wild pitch to give North a 6-5 lead.
