Sachem East Girls Track: The Sachem East girls track team competed in Crossover "D" (Large School Crossover) on Tuesday evening as they continue preparing for a busy weekend with both the Hispanic Games and the Jim Howard Memorial Meet on the schedule. Highlights included the first and second place finish of Brittany Sepe (34'8.5") and Gabby Trejo (33'5") in the shot, and the third and fourth place finish of Alyssa Furlani (7:38.81) and Holly Lindoe (7:43.96) in the 1,500-meter racewalk. Also placing in the top six were Rachel Paul, third in the 300 in 43.62, and Melanie Notarstefano, fourth in the 600 in 1:45.38. Although short of scoring in this 22 team meet, the dramatic improvements of Essence Sterling, Jackie Wasilco, Sam Eng, and Ally Figalora bodes well for the League I Championship meet, just over three weeks away.

Sachem North Girls Track: Kristie Michta’s season-best high jump (5’ 2”), Sunja Joseph’s career-best long jump (16’ 8”), and Melissa Michels sizzling 55 m. dash (7.47) were among Sachem North's highlights at “Large School” Crossover D tonight at Suffolk West. The meet format – all large school teams will meet again at February’s County Championship Meet – gave talent-rich teams in Leagues I, II and III and chance to see each other as the stakes get greater in each Suffolk County meet in the weeks approaching post-season contests.

"You get out of athletics what you put in," said Sachem coach Alex Young. "This is the mantra Sachem has used to challenge itself during the indoor season.  Consistency in physical and mental preparation, in attendance and effort at workouts and in learning more about track and field events pays off.

"This was demonstrated tonight as Sachem had some outstanding performances a day after a tough track workout as Sachem refused to yield to an early January meet as it looks ahead to greater goals."

Becca Duffy, Kelly Lavan, Alyssa Leto, Gabriella Czerw, Nikki Fogarty and Katie Michta led the team with front-running efforts during the meet.  Freshman Ashley Williams (300 m.) and sophomore Larissa Lauer (1500 m. racewalk) showed teammates and spectators Sachem’s depth as Ashley and Larissa showed significant improvements in their principal events over the past two weeks.  This team depth will be a key element of Sachem’s success against very competitive League I teams in the postseason.

Kelly Lavan’s competition night was scheduled to end following her 600 m. run.  Following her outstanding race in her first-ever 600, Kelly volunteered to take on pacing duties in the 3,000-meter run. Freshman Elise Ramirez followed instruction to “tuck in” behind Kelly in her first-ever 3000 for Sachem. Lavan clicked off 51 and 52 second laps with Ramirez right on her heels. Lavan encouraged Elise to stay close during tough mid-race laps. Ramirez determination to stay with Kelly was shown in lap 11 as Ramriez ran her fastest lap since lap 1 of the race. Ramirez and Lavan crossed the finish line together in a time of 12:49.0. The time was well ahead of a projected time for Ramirez.

"Elise was exhausted but pleased with her race time," Young said. "Lavan demonstrated the best of teamwork in pacing a young teammate through a tough race."

A second freshman team member – Brigid Rattiger – benefitted from Kelly’s efforts as Brigid stuck with her teammates’ pace through the mile mark on her way to a time that was 20 seconds ahead of her seed time.

Sachem competes at the Hispanic Games (New Balance Track and Field Center at the Armory) and at the Jim Howard Meet (Suffolk West) next weekend.
