A daily look at the sports action around Sachem.

Sachem North Boys Winter Track: On Sunday, Sachem was led by Colin Eberhardt's first place finish in the mile. He ran the mile in 4:37.  Alex Lazarich placed fifth in the 600 and Anthony Coccia placed eighth in the two-mile with a time of 10:33. This time placed Coccia on the Suffolk County Winter Track Best of Season list. Sophomores Brandon Arango and Chris Biryla led the sprinters with excellent races in the 55 meter dash and 300 meter dash. Arango ran a 7.35 and Chris turned in a time of 40.79.  Robert Yannotta continued his high jump success with a second place jump of 5'08''. 

Sachem East Girls Winter Track: Again led by its racewalking and throwing squads, the Sachem East girls track team put on a show of team depth by scoring in 12 out of the 15 events in the 12-team field at Crossover "C" at Suffolk West Sunday. Kelly Maranchuck won the 1,500-acewalk in an outstanding 7:28.80, but even more impressive was the 2, 3, 4, 6 finish of Alyssa Furlani (7:37.00), Amanda Catherall (7:45.83), Holly Lindoe (7:50.91), and Sam Curry (8:32.88). The throwing squad went 1, 2, 4 in the shot put with Gabby Trejo taking the win with a 34' 1.5" performance, followed by Brittany Sepe (33' 2") and Pam Emengo (29 '1"). Alyssa Naer (4' 9") and Maddy Egan (4' 6") took 1st and 2nd in the High Jump, and the 4 by 800 Relay Team of Shannon O'Hehir, Katie Hempfling, Rachel Paul, and Casey Gelderman also placed first.

Sachem East managed to place multiple scorers in a number of events. In the 55 Hurdles Sam Eng (10.16), Shannon Haberkorn (10.40), and Jess Grassi (10.43) took 3 of the scoring spots, placing 2, 3, and 4. Amanda DiSalvo (14' 4.75") placed 4th in the Long Jump followed closely by Ashley "Bean" Mercado whose 14' 3.5" garnered 5th. Sam Eng and Amanda Sluzewski performed similarly in the Triple Jump as Sam placed 5th with a jump of 29' 6", to edge Amanda who placed 6th with a best of 29' 3.5". In the 4 by 200 relay the quartet of DiSalvo, Egan, Mercado and Alyssa Picascio placed 4th, with the team of Jess Tracy, Jackie Wasilko, Paige Picascio, and Kaitlin Shanahan placing fifth.

Also scoring in open running events were Ashley Mercado, 4th in the 55 in 8.11, Shannon O'Hehir, 6th in the 600 in 1:48.75, Melanie Notarstefano, 4th in the 1000 in 3:14.86, and Nicole Silvestre, 4th in the 3000 in 11:16.74. Next up for the team are two high powered Invitational meets held during the vacation week, the Rhode Island Classic held in Providence Rhode Island, and the North Shore Invitational held at the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City.

Sachem North Girls Winter Track: Sachem placed six hurdlers in the top nine behind rookie freshman Nikki Fogarty 10.08, second place finish.  Sophomore Katie Michta blazed through the first mile of her 3000 meter run in 6:06 as she moved through a strong distance field in the second half of her race to place fourth overall in a career indoor-best of 11:34.10. Soph teammate Patricia Romano was close behind Katie (6:11) at the mile mark as she finished seventh overall in a career-best 12:11.40.

Sophomore Melissa Michels won her third 55 meter dash in three meets (7.73) with two first heat teammates also drawing oohs and aahs from fans as frosh sprinter Alyssa Leto (8.05) placed third and senior Shanice Futrell (8.15) topok fourth in the short sprint.  Ashley Williams (8.37) showed the frosh squad’s sprint depth as she tied for 8th in the dash.

Middle distance runners were led by co-captain Becca Duffy in the 600 meter run as she ran to her second career-best in two meets (1:45.62) as she placed third in the 600.  Sophs Erin Schreck (3:36.55) and Heather Monaghan (3:37.71) paced each other to career-bests in the 1000.  Junior Kristina Schrepf showed range as she led Sachem in the 300 (49.06) less than 45 minutes after running the 3000.

As the meet moved into the latter part of track events, field event results began coming in.  Sophomore Sunja Joseph continued her outstanding rookie season with a second place in the long jump (15’ 0 ¾”).  The North Arrows placed four athletes in the top six with Shanice Futrell (14’ 10 ½”) taking third, Sophomore Corri Moran (career-best 14’ 5”) placing fifth and senior co-captain (14’ 5 ½”) taking sixth.  Junior Carly Swinford (4’ 10”) won high jump with teammates junior Carissa Gaillard and soph Gabriella Czerw placing third and fourth respectively.  Sophomore Kaitlyn Okvist placed second in shotput (27’ 11”).  Sunja Joseph followed her second place long jump with a win in triple jump (33’ 2”) with Gabriella Czerw placing second (31’ 10”).

Back on the track, there were two more distance events to run before the relays.  Sachem fans and other spectators were about to see more of the North Arrows exciting team effort as the 1500 meter run athletes line up at the start.  At the gun, junior Kelly Lavan took off with no runners in close pursuit.  Kelly ran an exciting time trial-style race as she led from wire to wire and won the 1500 in a time of 5:03.55  Junior Marysa Mullen (5:36.66) and Oriana Howell (5:37.83) were also top ten finishers and frosh Elise Ramirez showed smart race tactics and her own aggressive style of running as she ran her first 1500  of the young season in 6:05.18.  Soph Katie Michta (7:31.88) led a strong pack of Sachem racewalkers as she won her second 1500 meter racewalk in two meets with four more teammates finishing in the top nine.  

While sprinters finished high in the results in earlier events, times were merely okay by Sachem standards.  The 4x200 meter relay gave Sachem another chance to show the team’s talent and depth.  Sachem won the 4x200 in a season-best time of 1:54.63.  Alyssa Leto ran an outstanding leadoff leg.  Sunja Joseph and Nikki Fogarty took care of the baton in legs two and three and Melissa Michels extended the relay’s lead with the fastest 200 meter split of the meet on the track.  Sachem’s “B” relay of Siarra Fiol, Carly Swinford, Corri Moran and Gabriella Czerw placed third in 1:59.82.  Sachem’s 4x800 meter relay of Becca Duffy, Kelly Lavan, Oriana Howell and Marysa Mullen placed second in a time of 10:45.09.

Sachem had a solid team performance with six first, five second and five third place finishes in Crossover C’s fifteen events.  Sachem had multiple top six finishers in seven events and showed both depth and breadth of talent with strong efforts in all events.  Sachem North becomes a road warrior team over the holiday break as the team splits up for 12/27 Marine Corps Holiday Classic (at NYC’s New Balance Track & Field Center) and the 12/28 Rhode Island Classic (Providence, RI) before returning to Suffolk West for Crossover D on January 3.
