On Wednesday, April 13, the Sachem East girls track and field team won its second straight dual meet against Lindenhurst. Regardless of the cool, damp conditions, there were a number of strong performances.

In a wire-to-wire effort, junior Danielle Vasquez ran away from the field to place first in the 1,500-meter event with a season best time of 5:18.6. In similar fashion, Rachel Paul, also a junior, won decisively in the 400-meter in a season best time of 57.9 seconds. Junior Keri Teufel placed third in a time of 65.6. It was her first time ever racing the 400m distance.

The 800-meter run was fronted by two freshmen. Both of them came from behind to pass the leading Lindenhurst runner in the final straightaway. Kaitlin DiMartino placed first in a personal best of 2:32.6 while Amanda DiSalvo placed second in a personal best of 2:34.5. DiSalvo also notched a first place performance in the Long Jump with a  14’8.25’’ jump. It was the first time she’s ever won an event in a dual meet.

Also placing first and second in their event were sophomore Laurie Semetsis and freshman Katie Hemphling. In the 3000m, they ran 11:35.5 and 12:02.6 respectively. It was Semetsis’ debut at the 3000m distance and a powerful one indeed.

In the 1,500-meter racewalk, Sachem East continued their dominating ways to grab all three scoring spots. All juniors, Kelly Maranchuk placed first in 7:32.3, Amanda Catherall placed second in 7:37.4, and Alyssa Furlani placed third in 7:53.9. It was Catherall’s best time of the season and Furlani’s best time ever.

Likewise, in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, the team of Melanie Notarstefano, a junior, Maddy Egan, a sophomore, and Jessica Grassi, a junior, grabbed all three scoring spots. Notarstefano took first in 70.9, Egan took second in 76.0, and Grassi took third in 81.5.

Continuing the trend, this time in the throwing events, (shot put and discus,) was the trio of senior Brittany Christiansen, and sophomores Brittany Sepe and Diamond Jackson. Sepe won the shot put with a throw of 36’1.5’’, Jackson was the runner up with a throw of 33’8’’, and Christiansen took third with a throw of 33’7’’. In the discus, Sepe placed first with a throw of 94’. Chrstiansen was a close second place with a throw of 92’10’’ while Jackson took third with an 89’10’’ throw.

Other notable individual performances include:

  • Alyssa Genduso – 1st place in the 100m dash – 12.5
  • Diamond Jackson – 3rd place in the 100m dash – 14.3
  • Sam Eng – 2nd place in the 100m High Hurdles – 17.3

Sachem East also swept the three relay events. The 4x100m team of Ebonie Lewis, Ashley Mercado, Essence Sterling, and Alyssa Genduso ran a season best time of 51.0. The 4x400m team of Danielle Vasquez, Amanda DiSalvo, Kaitlin DiMartino, and Laurie Semetsis compiled a time of 4:31.9. Finally, the 4x800m team of Melanie Notarstefano, Keri Teufel, Kristina Garry, and Rachel Paul ran a time of 10:27.3.

After two dual meets full of stellar performances on their home turf, all roads lead to Northport on April 26, where the team will be facing their strongest competition in the league. Northport were the Division Champions in the winter track season while the Sachem East girls were third. It should be an exciting competition, to say the least. The meet will begin at 4:00pm.
