Preview: East and North Girls Golf

Both teams look to make playoff push.

North

The Sachem North girls golf team finished .500 last year and just qualified as a team for counties. This year, the team will run behind the performances of Arielle Lindstrom and Sarah Rizik.

Lindstrom, in her fourth year of golf, has the ability to put up scores in the mid 40s on a 9-hole course. Rizik, a three-year varsity golfer, is very consistent and stays composed no matter the situation.

Head coach Claude Amallobietta said Rizik will get the nod to play against the opponent's top golfer this year.

Aside from those two, the rest of the team is comprised of a handful of beginners.

"When you have girls that haven't even played a real hole of golf, actually stepping on the course for the first time, just in a couple of weeks you see a tremendous improvement," Amallobietta said. "To see that improvement is very rewarding as a coach. We have a long way to go as far as having a program that's going to be competitive with the Mt. Sinai's out there."

North plays its home matches at Pine Ridge. It opens its season against East april 6 at 3:30 p.m. They play against each other again May 6.

East

East has three returning seniors: Breanne Van Nostrand, Samantha Leonardo, and Katherine Pena.

Alanna Doti and Holly Mero are sophomore returnees who will see action this year. New to the team are: Nicole Healy, Katherine Tan, Alexandra Davis and Diana Westerhaus.

"The team looks to improve on last year's record and make it to playoffs," said head coach Diane Groneman.
