Notebook: Sachem North Football Training Camp

A look at some notes from the first official day of training camp.

Thursday marked the first official day of training camp for football teams in Suffolk County. Sachem East and North hit the field for two-a-days at 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Learning the QB position: Sophomore Trent Crossan will be leading the Sachem offense for the next three seasons. He may have the best arm at Sachem since Craig Geoghan – currently at Stony Brook as a defensive back – and has a firm understanding of the offense so far.

“He’s going to throw the ball enough to make people have to cover it,” Sachem coach Dave Falco said. “I do see from him an understanding of the concepts."

Falco said they will be evaluating his decision making to see how he reacts in certain situations over the next two weeks.

Andreassi makes position change: Junior Tyler Andreassi will move from his defensive end position to inside linebacker, trying to fill the void left by his brother Michael and former teammate Jesse Scanna, who are both off playing sports in college. Andreassi will also play full back on offense.

“He’s going to have to make some calls and get us into some fronts,” Falco said. “It’s been a smooth transition. He’s in great shape.”

New look Sachem: No, its not a new coaching staff, field or play book, but the Sachem helmets at North are different for the first time in over 20 years. Sachem will be using a flat black paint (see photo gallery for images) instead of shiny black. Falco said there was a lot of discussion about the change.

“The kids really liked it and part of my job as coach is to keep things exciting for the new generation and new type of kid that we have,” he said.

It marks the first change to the Sachem uniform since the feathers were added to the Flaming Arrows helmet logo in the early 1980s.

Sachem will also be wearing throw-back jerseys at some point this season to celebrate their 50th anniversary season. Think pre 1971 era ... if you can remember what the jerseys look like back then, then you have an idea. If not, stay tuned for Sachem Patch for the official unveiling.

Fishkill next week: North travels to the Fresh Air Fund Camp in Fishkill, N.Y. Sunday for a week of long distance training. Sachem has been going there since 1983. Check Sachem Patch next week for live coverage on Wednesday from camp.

1986 team reminder: If you were a member of the 1986 Rutgers Trophy team and haven’t seen this notice already, Sachem will be honoring that group on Oct. 21 for a 25th anniversary celebration. To learn more about how you can get involved, .
