North Squanders Lead, Falls to Connetquot in Extras

Mazzaro's walk-off the difference for T-Birds.

Emily Mazzaro's towering two-run home run off Mackenzie Margolis in the bottom of the seventh inning pushed Connetquot past Sachem North on Tuesday afternoon, 5-3.

Mazzaro, who was thrown out at the plate by centerfielder Kristine Gay in the bottom of the fifth to keep the game knotted at three, finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI.

"I was just looking for a pitch right inside," said the senior captain. "That’s my favorite spot. I just came out of a slump, so that helped me a little bit too."

Sachem (5-10, 5-11) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning. With the bases loaded, Chelsea Palma hit a sinking line drive to right field that went through the T-Birds right fielder and all the way to the wall. Palma advanced to third on the two-run, two-base error, but was stranded there.

Connetquot clawed their way back into the game with a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the fifth before Mazzaro's game-winning homer. Mazzaro doubled off the base of the left field wall in the third, scoring Amanda Schoenfeld to get the T-Birds (12-4) on the board.

"It meant a lot to us," Mazzaro said of the win. "Especially since we’re trying to seed good in the playoffs and everything, and coming back today really helped for the playoffs."

Sophomore Kaitlyn Muhlenforth allowed just three hits and three walks in seven innings while striking out one to earn her first varsity win.

Marissa Monaco's single scored Schoenfeld again in the fifth to cut Sachem's lead to 3-2. With one out and runners on second and third, Arrows coach Ken Sasso brought in Margolis in relief of starter Jen Daniello.

"My pitcher was starting to not hit her spots, she was getting hit a little hard," said Sasso. "They had runners on and we were just trying to give them another look."

Casey Shannon then shot a single up the middle scoring Monaco, but Gay fired to home plate in time to nab Mazzaro to keep the score tied.

"The outfielders really kept us in the game early. Kristine Gay had a couple of great shoestring catches."

The teams played a scoreless sixth before Mazzaro ended it.
