North Baseball Opens Season with Win

Beats Pat-Med, 5-2, on muddy fields at home.

The cold, wet field didn't stop the Sachem North baseball team from starting the season off with a win. Starting pitcher Dan D'Orazio pitched excellent, and received many clutch hits from his teammates to defeat Patchogue-Medford 5-2 in a non-league game Wednesday afternoon.

D'Orazio gave up back-to-back singles to start the game, but settled down nicely after that. Pat-Med scored a run off him in the fourth and fifth innings, but that was all they could muster.

Sachem scored a run in the first inning off a Joe Maiolo single and added two runs in the second off a Mike Scarlato single to extend the lead to 3-0.

That was all Sachem needed as D'Orazio was in control the whole game. The final two runs were scored off a Brian Hennelly double in the fifth inning to make it 5-2.

Hennelly was 1-2 with a walk and two RBI, Mike Scarlato was 1-3 with a walk and two RBI, and Joe Maiolo was 1-3 with an RBI single for Sachem North.

With his team up 5-2 in the seventh inning, oach Tom Gambino decided to put Alec Sole in to pitch and move D'Orazio to centerfield. D'Orazio finished the game with four strikeouts and let up seven hits. Sole struck out one and made two impressive plays off the mound to finish the game.

This was the way Sachem North wanted to head into its first league game, which is Monday April 5 at home versus Central Islip.
