North's Kayla Cataldo and East's Melanie Notarstefano, Brittany Christiansen and Greg Markfelder will join Rachel Paul in the New York State Championship Meet Friday after their winning performances at the second day of the qualifier meet Saturday at Port Jefferson High School.
Cataldo won the pole vault, jumping a height of 10 feet even.
"Kayla was the only vaulter to clear the height on her first attempt," said North's coach Alex Young in an email. "Neither remaining vaulter cleared the height and Kayla won the county title. Kayla had a near miss on her second attempt at 10'4" – a height that would have broken the school pole vault record of 10' 0" held by Kayla."
Christiansen won the shot put with a throw of 38'1" and Notarstefano won the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.12 seconds.
"It was hard to see the two days [of the meet] as anything but a huge success," said East's coach Dan Schaub also in an email.
Markfelder won the high jump, jumping 6'6".
Paul took second in the 1,500-meter run with a time that qualified her for states in that event as well.
Regardless if they made states or not, all of Sachem's athletes pulled through with strong performances Saturday. East's Kelly Maranchuck won the 1,500-meter racewalk with a time of 7:02.14, but will not move on to the state meet because the racewalk is not a contested event at the meet in the spring.
North's 4x800-meter relay team made up of Chris Weilbacher, Colin Eberhardt, Brendon Hayes and Ryan Beierle placed 8th with a time 8:19.67. East's Morgan Genoino placed 6th in the 200-meter dash finals.
In the racewalk, East's Alyssa Furlani and Holly Lindoe placed 3rd and 4th, respectively. North's Katie Michta placed 7th at 7:25.70 and D'Ashley Landry placed 11th at 7:40.06.
Kristie Michta from North placed 4th in the high jump with a jump of 5'2". North's 4x800-meter relay team made up of Kelly Lavan, Becca Duffy, Cataldo and Keira Wood placed 7th with a time of 9:40.25.
Other competitors include East's all-freshman 4x800-meter relay, which ran a time of 10:06, and Meghan Walsh and Ally Figalora, both from East, in the 400-meter hurdle finals.
North's Sunja Joseph and Gabriella Czerw both competed in the triple jump with jumps of 33' and 31'11 ¾", respectively. Carly Swinford high jumped 4'10" and Jessica Heymach pole vaulted 8'6".
The five athletes will compete at the New York State Championships Friday and Saturday at Caledonia-Mumford High School. Sachem Patch will being posting results of the meet after its completion this weekend.
