Mattituck Ousts North Girls From Playoffs

Flaming Arrows lose 28-24 on neutral court at Patchogue-Medford.

With time winding down in the second half, Mattituck roared back from 5 points down to a 28-24 win over Sachem North in its final Summer League Town of Brookhaven Girls Basketball game of the season on Wednesday evening at Patchogue-Medford High School.

North's Brook Foltmann lead the team in scoring with 8 points.

North was primed to end the season on a high note as it looked to take control in the second half on the strength of a pair of scoring drives towards the basket by Foltman that put them up by 5.  However, Sachem's momentum was cut short and it was unable to score after that point.

"Towards the end of the game we got tired and our bigs weren't boxing out and we didn't have the same kind of hustle (as in the first half)," said North coach John Cosgrove.

North didn't start out the game strong falling behind by six early, but it was able to take back momentum on a 10-2 run and lead 14-12 at the half.

"I think we moved the ball around well and did a good job boxing them out, although we still have to do a better job of that," said North's Danielle Levine, who scored 4 points.

North went on a roll early in the second half before sputtering to end it.  After Foltmann's pair of 2 pointers, Mattituck scored 9 unanswered points to end the game.

"We got a little tired towards the end, but we have to learn to keep going," said North's Shayla Cosgrove.  Cosgrove scored 4 points.

Courtney Barone also had a strong offensive game for North with a 6-point performance, including sinking both of her free throw attempts.

Coach Cosgrove hopes to improve his team's chances for next season by inviting North players to open practices this summer.

"I want to get the kids involved," said Cosgrove, "get them to work in the gym and do all that good stuff."
