Markfelder Wins High Jump, North Places Fourth in 4x800-Meter Relay at Division Championships

East scores a total of 26 points, North 4 as meet draws to a close.

In much more favorable weather conditions than Monday, the Sachem East and North boys varsity track teams competed in the second and final day of the Suffolk County Division Championships at Connetquot High School Wednesday.

In the final event of the meet, Greg Markfelder was the last man standing in the high jump and took first place with the height of of 6'5", scoring 10 points for East. Also scoring was North in fourth place in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 8:19.92, which earned the team 4 points.

North's Frank McCabe vaulted 11 feet in the pole vault and came in seventh place. Zach Patsy from East ran a 4:45.32 in the unseeded mile run and North's Alex Lazarich competed in the 400-meter dash finals with a time of 55.82 seconds, placing 10th. North also had a team in the 4x100-meter relay.

Despite only scoring 26 points throughout the whole meet, East's coach John Hinkaty was happy with the boys' performances.

"Lots of guys stepped up, a lot of surprises...a lot of good kids. They did well for themselves," he said.

Next up is the Section XI New York State Qualifier meet next month, where boys will compete for a spot in the state meet.
