Parents, teachers, coaches and above all, student athletes, filled the Sachem High School North auditorium Tuesday night to recognize both the individual and team accomplishments of the soon-to-be graduating class of 2010.
Fourteen awards and scholarships were awarded to the top athletes. Many of the awards were in memory of former Sachem teachers and students, whose families created scholarships in their name.
Sachem North had a very successful school year, both on the field and in the classroom. Twenty-two of the 28 varsity teams were awarded as Scholar Athlete teams, a recognition given by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for teams having high standing grade point averages.
The top three awards given at the ceremony were for the top male, female and two scholar athletes. The winners, voted on by the varsity coaches, were Davon Lawrence, Megan McNulty, Karley Dutra and Zach Coleman, respectively.
"It feels great," said Coleman, when asked what he was feeling after being awarded with the Thomas J. Sabatelle Senior Scholar Athlete Award. "All the hardwork in the pool and weight room paid off."
Coleman, a member of the boy's varsity swim team, will be attending the University of Connecticut in the fall.
"It's nice to be rewarded after four years of work," said Dutra, who also won the award. She finished fifth overall in her graduating class, and will be attending Wesleyan University in Connecticut this fall, majoring in neurobiology.
Lawrence, the soft-spoken, humble star running back for Sachem North football, credited his Richard Van Norr Memorial Award for outstanding senior Male Athlete award to his teammates, and praised his fellow classmates.
"It feels good," said Lawrence. "I was up against a lot of good guys. It was hard work." He will be attending Stony Brook University next year on a football scholarship.
McNulty was nearly at a loss for words when asked how she felt after being awarded the Linda Otten Award for outstanding senior female athlete.
"It's a huge accomplishment," she said with a big smile. "All the hard work finally paid off." She will be attending SUNY Oswego this fall.
